Boho Clothing and Its Vintage Connection

Because I was so poor as a young newlywed, when I needed clothes I would often drive to all the thrift stores in my town to see what deals I could find. Prices were usually very good, never paying more than $10 for anything. I was downtown San Francisco a couple weeks back and noticed those days may soon be gone!
Today's thrift stores (which are a rich source for Boho clothing) are turning into modern Vintage stores it would seem. And for good reason. When something is called "Vintage" you can charge way more for it. In the vintage stores in the Haight, I was finding items of clothing for $20 even up to $50. These were the same things I used to buy for just a few dollars. So, what's going on? It's called supply and demand.
The vintage stores are mixed right in with the designer shops which are carrying the latest trends in fashion clothing. And people are flocking to it and gobbling it up like it's going out of style! Well, the reason it's so dang popular is because it IS NOT GOING OUT OF STYLE. A lot of the vintage selections are getting harder to find because it's so popular. Like a rare car, the prices rising is justified as some styles become more rare. The sweaters, tees with all the cool prints, the long coats, and the jeans are all very sought after-especially in the cities. And as any basic course in economics will teach you, as supply goes down and demand goes up, prices soar.
This creates an interesting dynamic. When it comes to Boho Clothing, a lot of the components can be found in vintage stores. While that used to afford a nice bargain, it is becoming less the case. You can pay the same price for a used piece as you might for a new item of clothing. I'm less likely to do that. I'd rather have it new.
But, one of the greatest advantages of vintage is that you're reusing clothing--that's more green. I'm all about that! But, many people are less concerned about being green and just wouldn't purchase something used at new prices. So, really it seems to me that the vintage stores need to be very careful about pricing too high. Otherwise, it becomes less appealing to go green and many will just fore-go it altogether when shopping for Boho clothing. That's just the way people tend to be.
