Introduction to Knitting

Knitting is fun and creative! No longer a craft or hobby just for grannies, grab your needles and give it a go!

(And I have it on good authority that it is a useful activity to take up whilst quitting smoking as it keeps your hands busy!)

Here are some guides to the basic stitches used in most easy beginners knitting projects:

  • Casting on How to cast on, that is start your knitting by putting the first row of stitches onto your needle.
  • Casting off How to Cast off. Finish a piece of knitting and remove from the needle.
  • Knit stitch The basic and most commonly used stitch, also known as stocking stitch.
  • Purl stitch A very commonly used and useful knitting stitch.
  • Ribbing Used to finish the edges of garments such as on the cuffs of sleeves.
  • Knitting Gauges How to check that your knitting will turn out exactly as the pattern promises.
  • Knitting Needles All about knitting needle types, what they are used for and materials they are made from.
