Knit/Stocking Stitch
This is the basic knit stitch. It is known as the stocking stitch from when people used to knit their socks. Using just the knit stitch your piece of knitted wool is the strongest it can be with each row placing the knots on opposite sides.
1) Place the needle with the newly cast on stitches in your left hand. Insert the right hand needle through the top stitch on the left hand needle at the back. In this photo one stitch has already been made on the right hand needle, but the position of the needles is the same for every knit stitch.

2) Bring the yarn behind the needles, and thread back through between them.

3) Pull the right hand needle back, rolling the tip under and pushing over the top of the left hand needle in order to pick up the new stitch.

4) The new stitch stays on the right needle (unlike in casting on) and you need to slip the stitch on the right needle completely off. This makes one knit stitch.
Repeat these instructions for every stitch on the right hand needle, until they are all in effect on the left hand needle. This is 1 row of knitting.
