Scrunchies
Only a fabric strip and piece of elastic are required to make these useful hair accessories. (doesn't really matter which width elastic you use but 1/2 inch width works well for me.)
The size of fabric needed can vary depending on how big you would like your scrunchie to be and how many times you like to turn them when you put your hair up. For myself, I use 20 inch length by 6 inch width piece of fabric with 7 inches of elastic. This gives a fairly big scrunchie that i can turn twice round my hair when putting up in a pony tail. For my 3 year old daughter however I use 15 inch length by 5 inch width material with 4.5 inch length of elastic.

- Fold the fabric in half so the pattern is inside out.
- It's useful to iron in creases to make sewing easier. I also iron one end to turn inwards when completing the scrunchie. (My hands aren't always so steady so ironing in the line to follow on the sewing machine to sew the outside edges is helpful too.)
- Sew up the outside edge using a sewing machine or by hand if you like.
- Attach one end of the elastic to the material and pull the tube of material rightside out so the pattern is now on the outside. Safety pins can make this easier if you put it through the elastic.

- Pull the elastic through and put a stitch through both ends to form a circle of elastic.
- Now hand sew the open ends of the material together. ( I stitch through the elastic at the inside of the scrunchie circle. The flap that was ironed in at the start can be folded inwards when sewing up the ends to give a nice finish. )
If the finished seam looks a bit uneven don't worry, twist the material round and you have a perfect scrunchie!

Reversible Headband
I have a thing for reversible at the moment, its easy to do and gives a nice finish!
Materials needed
- 2 pieces of fabric for the elastic 13cm /5" by 4cm/1.5"
- 8cm/3" elastic, 1" width elastic works better but you can make them with any width really.
- 2 pieces of fabric in the 'headband shape'. Start out with a rectangle in both fabrics 41cm/16" by 8cm/3". Pin both bits together and fold in half again so everything is symmetrical. As you can see in the above picture I cut out a curved triangle to taper the edges of the head band. You don't need to do this and can vary the width and size to suit your own head.
Steps
- Sew together the 2 main pieces of fabric inside out, I use a 1/4" seam allowance, if you leave more you might need to trim this before turning rightside out as it can show lumpy bits.
- Press the main part of th eheadband flat, I also iron the open edges under to give a nicer finish when attaching the elasticated part of the headband.
- Sew the 2 smaller pieces of material for the elasticated part of the headband together inside out and turn right way.
- Thread the elastic through this smaller tube of fabric and pin both elastic and fabric in place just inside the 2 openings on the side of the main part of the headband. Fold the open edges of the main part of the headband inside to give a neater finish.
- Sew across all bits to secure.
